Why StopNCII and NCMEC's Take It Down Aren't Finding Your Images (and What Does)
StopNCII and NCMEC's Take It Down are powerful, but they don't search the web or file takedowns. Here's what they do, what they can't, and who fills the gap.
What these tools actually do
They do one job well: they stop matching images from being re-uploaded on platforms that partner with them, using hashing. You select the image on your device, the tool creates a digital fingerprint, and only that fingerprint is shared, never the image itself.
Why it can feel like they aren't helping
They don't search the web for your images; they wait for someone to try re-uploading a match on a partner platform. StopNCII covers only about 20 partner platforms as of mid-2026, so forums and dedicated deepfake hubs usually aren't reached. They can also miss cropped, filtered, or AI-altered copies, and they don't file takedowns on your behalf.
What the TAKE IT DOWN Act changed
Since May 19, 2026, the FTC enforces a rule requiring covered platforms to remove a validly reported non-consensual intimate image, plus known copies, within 48 hours, covering real and AI-generated images. But you still have to find the content and submit a request for each place it appears; the law doesn't do the searching.
What a fuller response looks like
Getting images down usually takes four layers: detection (actively searching, including altered or AI versions), removal (submitting takedowns and escalating), prevention (hash tools like StopNCII), and evidence (organized records for any further action). StopNCII and Take It Down own the prevention layer, one piece of four.
Who does what
Start with StopNCII.org (18+) or Take It Down/NCMEC (under 18) for prevention.
